But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit. NIV

5彼らは、生きている人々をも死んだ人々をも、すぐにもさばこうとしている方に対し、申し開きをしなければなりません。6 というのは、死んだ人々にも福音が宣べ伝えられていたのですが、それはその人々が肉体においては人間としてさばきを受けるが、霊においては神によって生きるためでした。

 

God is the Righteous Judge! Never forget that although God loves us, it doesn’t mean He will tolerate or overlook sin. Would you put poison in your morning coffee or tea? Some things are simply not tolerable, are they? If we think of sin like this we will truly understand how intolerable it is in our lives. We must also understand that as believers we have a responsibility to let others know about God’s love and how He longs to have a personal relationship with them. We have received so much from the Lord and we have the responsibility to bring the message of reconciliation to them. 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 states it plainly. “From this time on we do not think of anyone as the world does. In the past we thought of Christ as the world thinks, but we no longer think of him in that way. If anyone belongs to Christ, there is a new creation. The old things have gone; everything is made new!  All this is from God. Through Christ, God made peace between us and himself, and God gave us the work of telling everyone about the peace we can have with him. God was in Christ, making peace between the world and himself. In Christ, God did not hold the world guilty of its sins. And he gave us this message of peace. So we have been sent to speak for Christ. It is as if God is calling to you through us. We speak for Christ when we beg you to be at peace with God. Christ had no sin, but God made him become sin so that in Christ we could become right with God.” (NCV)

Thank you, Lord, for all that you have done for me. I want to hate sin like you do so I won’t tolerate it in my life! Also Lord, I want to bring your message of reconciliation to others so that they might have the Living Hope that only you can give.

主が私にして下さった全ての事に感謝します。私が人生で許容すしないよう、あなたのように罪が嫌いになりたいです!主よ、彼らがあなただけが与えることができる生きる希望を持つことができるように、あなたの和解に関するメッセージを他のものにもたらしたいと思います。

 

2-Sunday　2日－日曜日

The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. NIV

万物の終わりが近づきました。ですから、祈りのために、心を整え身を慎みなさい。

 

As the time for the current phase of Jerry and my ministry in Japan draws to a close we find ourselves caught up in the emotions of farewells, the pressure of last minute details, and wanting to leave a legacy of the goodness of God. Sometimes all of us can see when things are ending. Sometimes none of us know when separation will come in a minute’s time. That is why we all should take the opportunity to pray for others all the time. Every day we live is another opportunity to live our lives by godly standards and to share God’s love and gift of reconciliation. Remember that there is never a moment we can’t pray, whether we are with a person or geographically separated. Prayer for others is like touching God’s heart and His hands, reaching out in love to others. Geographical separation is nothing in God’s sight. Possibly that is why Paul said “Pray without ceasing!” (1 Thessalonians 5:17 NKJV-emphasis is mine) Prayer works in us as well to make us more discerning, gracious, and loving. Take time to share the love of God when you have the opportunity to do so in person, but also pray for others continually. God will send someone to minister His love and truth person to person.

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. NIV

Love is the motivation behind our actions that eliminates selfishness, criticism, and manipulating others to do things our way. If love truly motivates like that, then unkind words would never be spoken. When love is the foundation, we will respond in kindness not with defensiveness. Unfailing love not only forgives but also disregards unintended (as well as intended) offenses. Love purifies motivations and gives patience and understanding to our attitude and our actions. If love is the heart then we will be a people who bring healing, hope, and encouragement. Examine yourself. Is love your motivation for words and deeds or is it having things done your way?

Lord, I want to have a determination to love as you do. You give me loyal, committed love. It seems the least I can do is pass that on to others. Lord, please let your love shine through me. When I am motivated to respond selfishly, cleanse it from my thinking so I can be the person of love that you desire.

Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. NIV

Jerry and I have traveled to many countries and many places. I can’t begin to tell you the blessing that hospitality has been to us. To be graciously welcomed in as family even though we often are strangers speaks volumes about God’s welcoming love. Hospitality is not to be given only to our known acquaintances, but is to be given to strangers as well. Hebrews 13:2 tells us “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” Jesus emphasized the importance of hospitality in Matthew 25:35 “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.” Then He finishes this in verse 40, “I tell you the truth, anything you did for even the least of my people here, you also did for me.” Love opens the door to welcome others. Both the unlovable and the lovable are received. Hospitality does take effort and planning. But God’s love is in us teaching us how to be gracious. Notice that hospitality is to be without complaint! Being hospitable is a practical way to show others God’s unfailing love. The very concept of hospitality is to shelter and care for others in need. Don’t we all need that? Shouldn’t we willingly give it to others so that they might be able to experience it as well?

Lord, thank you for welcoming me into your family. I pray that the love you have lavished on me will overflow to others. May others feel welcomed and loved when they come into our home, just as you have welcomed me into your family.

5-Wednesday　5日－水曜日

1 Peter 4:10　ペテロ1　4:10

Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. NIV

それぞれが賜物を受けているのですから、神のさまざまな恵みの良い管理者として、その賜物を用いて、互いに仕え合いなさい。

Do you ever look at someone else’s gifting or talents and either wish you had their talent or feel inadequate because you somehow feel insignificant or lacking? What is the truth? The truth is that each one of us has a special spiritual gift. Every believer has been endowed with the perfect gift to meet the needs in others. Our gifting isn’t about making ourselves great in other’s eyes, but about glorifying God and being a blessing to others. There are many facets to God’s grace and He has given different aspects of that grace to us so we will be a blessing to others. Look at Romans 12:3-13 and think about how God values each one of us and about His desire to see us be a blessing to each other. “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.  Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”

Thank you for your generous giftings, Lord. I want to be a minister of your peace and love to others. Show me how to affectively use the gift you have placed in me.

主よ、あなたの豊富な贈与をありがとうございます。あなたの平和の大臣であり、他のものを愛したいと思います。どのように感情にあなたが私に置いた贈り物を使用するかを私に示してください。

 

6-Thursday　6日－木曜日

1 Peter 4:11　ペテロ1　4:11

If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. NIV

語る人があれば、神のことばにふさわしく語り、奉仕する人があれば、神が豊かに備えてくださる力によって、それにふさわしく奉仕しなさい。それは、すべて のことにおいて、イエス・キリストを通して神があがめられるためです。栄光と支配が世々限りなくキリストにありますように。アーメン。

 

Have you examined your words recently? I don’t know about you, but sometimes I speak without thinking, especially when I am tired. My words don’t always come out kind or graciously. Yet, Peter’s challenge is that we should speak wisely and graciously so as to reveal God’s character and ways. This is not easy! But Peter knew that! We can see his impulsive speech in the gospels! If Peter could learn to speak graciously, anybody can! The challenge is to show God’s graciousness so we can edify and encourage others in everything we say and do. This should be especially true in confrontational situations. Confrontation should be for the purpose of benefiting someone for their spiritual health. There are times when we need to speak directly to an issue. But our goal should be for the person’s faith to be built up not to destroy them! All that we do and say must be Christ-centered and Christ energized. This is what keeps us from being self-centered and trying to do things for our own advantage. The goal is always to glorify God. When we glorify God, He always makes us look good. But be careful that you don’t take pride in that. Because then you have just make it all about you instead of about glorifying God!

Lord, you know how often I speak without engaging my brain, let alone invoking your graciousness! Please help me to put a watch on my mouth. I DO want to honor you in my words!

語る人があれば、神のことばにふさわしく語り、奉仕する人があれば、神が豊かに備えてくださる力によって、それにふさわしく奉仕しなさい。それは、すべて のことにおいて、イエス・キリストを通して神があがめられるためです。栄光と支配が世々限りなくキリストにありますように。アーメン。

 

We often say or hear the phrase “glorify the Lord.” In practical day-to-day living, how do we do this? It is really simple when you stop and think. Honor the Lord by spending time in His word, learning about His character, ways, and standards, and then live by them. Learning to live by God’s standards lightens the load of the heavy burden of sin. We glorify God by recognizing Jesus as His Son and accepting Him as our Lord and Savior and then living in the light of God’s word. The key is to recognize when stress or struggles come. Don’t allow yourself to respond in worldly ways, but wholly lean on God’s abundant grace to enable you to respond according to His values. Never forget that God’s grace and wisdom are always, ALWAYS lavishly available. Living by godly standards glorifies the Lord. It reveals His grace, love, and peace to others. Responding in our humanity is easy. Sin isn’t hard to do! It takes real will power, strength, and determination, fueled by God’s enabling, to respond in godly ways!

Lord, I do want to honor you in all that I say and do. I want to live for you and glorify you. I am so glad that I don’t have to do this in a vacuum, but can do it by your grace! Thank you for your ways! And thank you for your grace that enables me to live according to your will.

主よ、私が言ってするすべてであなたを尊敬したいと思います。あなたを生きがいとして、あなたを賛美したいと思います。非常にうれしいので、私は、真空でこれをする必要はありませんが、あなたの端麗でそれができます! 方法をありがとうございます! そして、あなたの意志に一致しながら私が生きるのを可能にする優雅にありがとうございます。

 

8-Saturday　8日－土曜日

1 Corinthians 15:58　第一コリント　15:58

So my dear brothers and sisters, stand strong. Do not let anything change you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your work in the Lord is never wasted. NCV

ですから、私の愛する兄弟たちよ。堅く立って、動かされることなく、いつも主のわざに励みなさい。あなたがたは自分たちの労苦が、主にあってむだでないことを知っているのですから。

 

We have so much going for us because of the Lord! If we focus on the Lord and His ways we stay on task. What caused David, a man after God’s own heart, to go totally off course? He didn’t do what his position as king required. 2 Samuel 11:1, “In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king's men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem.” It doesn’t matter if you are a pacifist, not blaming David for not wanting to go to war. It was his responsibility to lead and inspire his men. It was wartime. And the nations in the Middle East are warlike! Where do people go wrong and compromise God’s anointed position for them? It is when they ignore their responsibilities and do things their way instead of choosing to glorify the Lord. Remember that when living for Jesus your efforts are never wasted. They are never purposeless. The words of the hymn, “Living for Jesus,” written in 1917, express this goal.

Living for Jesus, a life that is true,
Striving to please Him in all that I do;
Yielding allegiance, glad hearted and free,
This is the pathway of blessing for me.

This is our last Sunday as pastors of Nara International Christian Center. It has been a blessing and joy to have pastored this church. Our love for you has not diminished, but only grown stronger. But the strongest commitment we have is to walk in obedience to what the Lord has spoken in our hearts. These two verses reiterate the challenge by which we all must live. Be alert! Your first allegiance is to the Lord. He is your faithful Shepherd and He will never leave you. People come and go. But the Lord is always there for you. Stand firm in your faith! God will remove anything or anyone who stands in the way of your learning to fully and completely rely on Him. People and things will fail you. But God never will fail you. Have courage! Trust Him with all your hearts. Trust isn’t dependant on your knowledge and understanding, but on the faithfulness and trustworthiness of the Lord. Your strength is found in the Lord. So you must make the decision to stand strong. Finally, the vital ingredient is love! Love the Lord with all heart and soul and with your mind and with all your strength. And love others as yourself. (Mark 12:30-31 paraphrased) Our love and prayers remain with you! Remember always, GOD IS FAITHFUL!!!!

The Greek word for “dear friends” is the same as “beloved.” Peter is addressing his readers in a way that expresses sincere and true love. You are loved! Because you are loved you have no reason to be alarmed or to live in fear. You are loved with a true and holy love by the Lord! Today would have been my Mom’s birthday. She was born September 10, 1910. The last few years of her life the quality of her life was greatly diminished. But she never lost her sense of humor or her ability to pray. She did wonder why God left her here on earth when she was so limited and every day was hard. But my sister and I knew that her prayers for us and our families were not just daily, but also powerful! And that she was accomplishing more through her prayer life than if she could do lots of good works. Do you wonder why you are going through difficulties? Never forget that trials are never a waste in God’s eyes. He has a purpose and a plan! One of the missions for believers is to be like a magnetic attraction to God for others so they will desire to know Jesus as well. Don’t let struggles go to waste. They are your opportunities to show others the hope and peace we have through having a personal relationship with Jesus.

We need to learn two perspectives NOT to have about difficulties. One is--don’t live in dread that something “bad” is going to happen! Dread shows a lack of trust, faith, and hope. The other perspective is--don’t be taken unaware! When I was in high school, one of the science teachers never, ever announced when he would give a test. The first period students would be shocked by the test and they would forewarn all the others who took his classes. The teacher felt that if you knew the subject you didn’t need to study in advance. It was a matter of being prepared daily for the test. This is a remarkable spiritual truth as well. If we are daily in tune spiritually, then as problems arise we will be prepared to pass the test with flying colors. A very positive truth to understand about trials is that they help us understand on a deeper and more personal level how Jesus suffered for us. They are opportunities to grow closer in relationship with Jesus. Remember that trials are never wasted because they draw us closer to Him and attract others to want to know Him!

If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. NIV

Notice the blessing connected with trials. “…you are blessed for the spirit of glory and of God rests on you.” Do you remember what Paul tells us about this phenomenon in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10? “But he (the Lord) said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” And again Paul wrote in Philippians 4:13 about the strength that the Lord gives “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” These things that were true for Paul and Peter are just as real and powerful for us today. The Lord never changes! The same power that resurrected Jesus is at work in our lives. When to others our situation might look hopeless, God’s resurrection power and enabling grace are at work, and we have that living hope that only God can give to hold us steady.

If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. NIV

あなたがたのうちのだれも、人殺し、盗人、悪を行なう者、みだりに他人に干渉する者として苦しみを受けるようなことがあってはなりません。

 

If you are suffering for doing wrong then you are reaping the consequences of your actions. Galatians 6:7-9 “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Examine yourself. Ask the Lord to open your understanding whether you are suffering the consequences of wrong doing or if you are going through something for the sake of the gospel. If it is the former, repent and receive the Lord’s purifying forgiveness. If it is the later then remember the heartening words of Psalm 37:3-6 “Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.”

Lord, I am grateful that I cannot deceive you! I don’t want to be deceived either! Show me when I do something that displeases you. Open my eyes to whatever it is so I can repent and be purified. I do trust you and am committed to following your ways!

However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.NIV

Trials and problems are not something to be ashamed of or hidden from people. Nor is there any need to apologize for tears. Self-imposed or culturally imposed guilt are not the subject here. Why? Because there is no sin involved in suffering for your faith. There is an incredible account of response to persecution found in Acts 5:41-42. “The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.” It is hard to rejoice for suffering. But when we remember that suffering for Christ’s sake enables us to identify more strongly with Jesus, it gives us heart to go on. Remember Paul’s’ testimony in Philippians 3:7-10 “But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ  and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ — the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death.” It is empowering to remember that our focus is on knowing Jesus more intimately and growing spiritually more mature. Learn how to rejoice in that privilege and not to lose focus by concentrating on the problem.

Lord, I am determined to choose to rejoice in the privilege of having trials instead of moaning and complaining about them. But I need your grace every minute of every day to accomplish this! Thank you that your grace is ever present for those who depend on you!

For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And, "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?"   NIV

Do you clean your room? If having a clean room is important, then how much more important it is to be clean in our hearts! We are a part of the household of God and suffering is often a tool of cleansing. We are like trees being pruned so we will become more fruitful. So whether you are going through a cleansing or pruning time personally or witnessing it in others, don’t be discouraged. God is at work! I love the “under construction” signs in Japan because they ask for your cooperation during the bothersome time of the work being done. That is the attitude we must have when God is at work cleansing and purifying His people. Cooperate with the work being done, even though it can be frustrating! The latter verse quotes Proverbs 11:31 which reminds us that we have the Lord to strengthen, encourage, enable us, and to walk with us through every situation. But those who don’t know the Lord have nothing, no living hope and no true purpose, for living. And they have no peace. I can’t imagine facing problems without the Lord to uphold me through it all. Jesus never leaves us nor forsakes us! His love is with us always and His peace anchors our souls. God is faithful! His mercies are fresh every morning and with them we daily have the hope we need.

So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good. NIV

The Greek word used for “commit” is from a word that implies “to deposit.” This is the same word Jesus said on the cross in Luke 23:46 “Jesus called out with a loud voice, ‘Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.’ When he had said this, he breathed his last.” Look at the awesome results because Jesus could trust His spirit into His Father’s hands! Resurrection! And for us, we now have that same resurrection power to rise above the ashes of suffering because “greater is He that is in you then he that is in the world”! (1 John 4:4)

Peter experientially knew the joys and burdens of church leadership. He was the one who spoke to the people in Acts 2 when many came to believe in Jesus and the church was originally formed. Peter understood leadership and discipleship! He had been through both. As a disciple to Jesus he had first-hand knowledge of Jesus’ style and quality of leadership, a perfect balance of humbleness, serving, and authority. Peter’s concern for the first century church isn’t diminished because we are now in the 21^st century. Human nature hasn’t changed. We still have the same problems. Peter’s first-hand knowledge of Christ’s suffering and the glory of His resurrection gave him all the qualifications needed for us to hear his voice.

A leader must have the heart of a shepherd. “God’s flock” is not their personal possession. The shepherd’s responsibility is to love, care, lead, and teach those who they are responsible for in how to live in obedience to God’s word. They must help the people to truly and experientially understand who Jesus is to them, personally. Therefore the shepherd must himself develop a deep personal relationship with Jesus. A shepherd must also accept the flock and the flock must accept the shepherd. In other words, the pastor may have high expectations of the people in the congregation and the congregation may have high expectations of the pastor. But both expectations may be unrealistic. Love and acceptance are the keys to harmony between the pastor and the people. We are all following the Good Shepherd, Jesus. And we need to learn to do so in harmony, mutually respecting each other’s differences.

The attitude in leaders as well as followers should be to have a willingness to serve one another, whether you feel like it or not! Paul admonished Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:2 “Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage — with great patience and careful instruction.” Being prepared in season and out of season means to serve when it’s easy as well as when it’s hard, when things are happening and when they are not. A pastor needs to have personal times of quiet restoration and spiritual rejuvenation as well as quality times with family. Having the gift of time gives physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental refreshment and health. This obviously benefits the pastor and his family. But it also benefits the congregation. Too often in a church, everyone becomes impatient with one another. But we need to be patient! Pastor to congregation and congregation to pastor. This patience enables spiritual edification and unity within the church.

Money can’t be the reason you serve! Think about what your motivation in serving is. Along with a willing attitude a leader should have an enthusiastic excitement to serve. When the leader is wholeheartedly serving the Lord and learning from the Word, the people in the congregation will catch that enthusiasm. The leader doesn’t have to force them to be excited because the leader’s excitement is contagious!

Leading isn’t about being bossy and making everything “all about you” and what you want. Ministry is about serving, not being served, self-control not controlling. A minister who demands that everyone does things his way becomes like a self-appointed “shogun” and doesn’t understand the Jesus style of gentle and humble, yet authoritative, leadership. Everything Jesus did was to glorify His Father. Jesus said in John 17:4 “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.” (NKJV) Every Christian’s (but especially church leader’s) responsibility is to glorify God. The tender, authentic love of a Christian leader impacts others because they observe the Lord’s grace and mercy through them. I have seen pastors who set up their own “kingdom” in the church resulting in the people being damaged spiritually and emotionally. It is of utmost importance that a leader is known for his sincere love of the Lord and tender loving care of others.

And the LORD heard this. (Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.) NIV

Moses led millions of people and yet never lost his sense of humility. He understood the greatness of the Lord and recognized that he was loved by the Lord. But the Lord was the true leader of the people. This chapter in Numbers has only 16 verses. Take time to read it and see that even though there was talk against Moses his response was loving. Moses’ reaction to those who murmured against him shows the way the heart of a leader should be.

There is a reward waiting for those who faithfully serve in leadership. Looking forward to the reward is not the purpose or goal of serving in ministry. But it does encourage us to know it is there. The goal should be to keep developing your personal relationship with the Lord. Maintain a healthy balance of personal time, family time, and serving the church. Leaders must have the attitude of faithfully serving the Lord. A leader must also be teachable so that you are able to learn what the Lords wants to teach you. Never believe your own press. You are never as great or as bad as people say. Keep a sense of humor about life but be serious about having a true fear of the Lord. Psalms 100 gives a description of the attitude one needs to maintain. Verses 2 and 3… “Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.”

I want to have a gentle heart towards you and others, but a tough skin to keep other’s critical words from wounding or even their words of praise from making me proud. Ministry is all about you and about lifting you up for you are the Lord of lords and King of kings!

After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. NIV

The world’s idea of success is fortune, fame, and power, push yourself to make others respect you, seek to please and elevate self. But isn’t our goal really about trying to find contentment, fulfillment, and satisfaction? Jesus, the Son of God, with all the power and authority of God, shows the true way to fulfillment. Look at what He did. He removed all the outward signs of identity from himself because He was secure in the knowledge of who He was. Then Jesus put on a towel like a servant’s style of apron and humbly washed the feet of the disciples. Can you imagine the shock the disciples felt as their teacher, master, and Lord performed the task of a servant by washing their feet? By example Jesus showed the power of true humility. He, who was all of God that could be contained in a human body, served His disciples who were fishermen, a tax collector, and even His betrayer. Jesus invested His life in others. He gave of Himself. By following His example, we learn that the path to true satisfaction and contentment is in the giving of ourselves.

“Be submissive” is said in the present tense to emphasize that it is up to us to make it our daily lifestyle! Notice that “all of you” means everyone! There are no exceptions! To “clothe yourself” comes from a rare figure of speech which is a word picture of a servant putting on an apron before serving people. Does that bring to mind what we read yesterday about how Jesus clothed himself with the towel of a servant? We must respect others, give care, and remember that we all need one another. We are all part of the body of Christ. We function differently. But accepting our differences and respecting one another are two of the most powerful attitudes of humility.

Often in a sincere, although mistaken way, we tend to rush ahead and try to make things happen. Often this attitude is cloaked in humble sounding words such as, “God has given me a brain and ability so I will do my best to see that something happens.” Sounds good, right? All of us are susceptible to this attitude! But we must refrain from trying to MAKE things happen thereby promoting self, but put ourselves under the mighty hand of God. How do we make everything we do “all about the Lord” and honoring Him rather than “all about ourselves” and how we try to make things happen? This isn’t a lazy evasion. This is actively seeking God’s direction and authority and walking in obedience to His prompting. Our goal is two simple words, trust and obey.

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. NIV

Do you ever feel anxious? Or worried? Or fretful? Do these anxieties start to stress you out? Do you feel like you just can’t handle everything going on in your life? David had more stress than we can imagine on the road to being the recognized king of Israel. After he became king he had a life of pressure and stress and wrote in Psalm 55:22 “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.” David and Peter both had discovered this secret to contentment! This attitude isn’t merely letting go of stress but humbly throwing it to God to carry. We all have time restraints, deadlines, and difficulties that play havoc with our lives. But letting go of that totally and completely gives emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual relief. Remember that the Lord lovingly and affectionately cares for you. You can trust Him to carry your burdens!

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. NIV

The word “devil” comes from “diabolos” which means slanderer or accuser. Revelation 12:10 gives us living hope of victory as well as insight for now. “Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: ‘Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.’ ” Jesus is the victor! He will destroy the devil. But until then the devil is accusing us day and night. He condemns you to yourself. He accuses you to others as well as to God. God knows the truth and Jesus is always interceding on our behalf. He doesn’t believe the devil’s lies! Unfortunately we often do! Think about whose voice you are listening to! The devil seeks to destroy out of hatred for you and for God. But the Lord seeks to redeem and give victory. We need to be alert to the roar of the devil by listening to the quiet, loving voice of the Lord whispering truth into our spirits! Be vigilant! Be careful to recognize the devil’s tactics and keep seeking the Lord’s grace to overcome. You can trust the Lord to enable you to overcome anything the devil throws at you!

Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. NIV

How do you withstand the tactics of the devil? How do you keep trusting the Lord? Know in whom you believe! Get to know God’s character that will establish strong roots of faith and will keep you immovable and determine to grow stronger by God’s enabling grace. There is a beautiful picture of this in Psalms 1:1-3 “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.” Paraphrased, this says blessed is the man who does　not indulge himself in sin because he recognizes the devil’s tactics and turns from them. This discernment happens by spending time in the Bible, searching out an understanding of God’s character, and by following His standards. Then that person becomes like a strong tree planted by the living water.

All of us suffer at one time or another. But the joy and hope we have in Christ gives our suffering purpose by strengthening our relationship with Him. We can rest in Him knowing that He works all things together for good in our lives. God has wonderful plans for us! He knows the end from the beginning. He is the One who deserves glory and praise forever. Keep your eyes and hearts planted in the knowledge of His loyal, committed love for you and your steps will be established!

Peter dictated his letter through Silas. Silas was a cultured, well-educated Roman citizen. Peter, a rugged impetuous fisherman, was blessed with a friend like Silas. In their relationship we can see the vitality in acceptance and unity. Silas also traveled with Paul and sang praises with him in the jail in Philippi. Silas is a beautiful example of a faithful friend. Most are a bit unsure about the next two people mentioned. Many believe Peter was speaking of his wife and of John Mark (the writer of the gospel of Mark.) Mark was a young man many leaders in the church took under their wings to disciple and teach. Peter closed with give a “kiss of love” which was the way that they showed deep affection and love for others. The kiss signified the love, unity, and harmony that Peter felt with his readers as well as his desire for them to feel true godly love for one another.

To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 22 "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth."23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. NIV

Is suffering exclusive to believers in Jesus? Not at all! For example, imagine a prison filled with thieves and murders. Every one in there is guilty. They are all suffering for their guilt…except for one man. One man was blamed, convicted, and imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. All the prisoners suffer equally. Jesus was totally innocent, but He suffered and died for us. It was in His suffering that His love and commitment to us was seen. It was in His sacrifice that the glory of God could be revealed. Without His death there could be no resurrection. Our goal is to allow the suffering we experience to be the showcase of God’s grace, love, and glory to be seen. It isn’t the “poor me’s” or anger or revenge that bring peace, joy, satisfaction and contentment. It is fully relying on God that does. When we hurt He is our secure hiding place. Only the Lord can give peace and joy, no matter what. Only the Lord gives the perspective and wisdom to handle the pain. Let the struggles and suffering you go through count for Jesus! And revel in the grace only He can give to strengthen you in the midst of problems.

For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. NIV

Jesus was sinless and perfect in every way. He left the comforts of heaven for you. He took on the aches and pains of having an “earth suit” (human body). He left the beauty, splendor, and perfection of heaven, everything, including His position, for one reason. That was because of His unconditional, committed, and loyal love. He gave up everything, sacrificed Himself for you, for me, for the person who irritates you, for the worst criminal, for the sweetest child, for the proud, and for the hurting people throughout history and around the world. His pain and suffering reached out, providing each person with a safe harbor for our lost souls. Jesus saw our need and that was more important than His comfort. It was not in weakness that Christ suffered and died, but in the strength of His unfailing love for us. Our response to His love makes the difference in having a dynamic life of grace or a meaningless life with no true satisfaction.

"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. NIV

「父よ。みこころならば、この杯をわたしから取りのけてください。しかし、わたしの願いではなく、みこころのとおりにしてください。」43 すると、御使いが天からイエスに現われて、イエスを力づけた。44 イエスは、苦しみもだえて、いよいよ切に祈られた。汗が血のしずくのように地に落ちた。

Was sacrificial love easy? Was taking the burden and blame for sin a simple thing? Is submissive obedience a passionless decision? Could Jesus have turned from the agony of betrayal, arrest, brutality, denial, loss of dignity and the anguish of being sacrificed for your and my sins? He could have turned away! He could have said, “Father, forget them; let’s create a world of robots who do what we want, when we want them to!” But Jesus didn’t do that. His love and trust in the Father held Him steady. His love for you and me gave Him the strength to surrender, take the responsibility for our sins, and pay the price for those sins so we could live in liberty. Without the surrender of all His rights as the Son of God there could have been no freedom for us, no resurrection, and no victory! Remember what Jesus did for you the next time obedience to God seems hard! Grab hold of His enabling grace and the promise of resurrection power and submit yourself into the security of God’s hands.

Thank you for the passion of your obedience, Jesus. It helps me to understand that obedience, although hard to give, is worth the effort. It reminds me that in surrender there is victory. Thank you for coming to earth to show me the way to heaven!

Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. NIV

そのとき、イエスはこう言われた。「父よ。彼らをお赦しください。彼らは、何をしているのか自分でわからないのです。」彼らは、くじを引いて、イエスの着物を分けた。

When Jesus took the blame for our sins He didn’t fault us for His pain and suffering. He didn’t feel sorry for Himself. He didn’t strike back. He could have done all this. But no, He forgave! He had chosen death over vengeance and forgiveness over holding a grudge. What right do we have to be unforgiving? Are we perfect? Haven’t each one of us at one time or another hurt someone? Forgiveness is unconditional. Forgiveness is not based on the offender’s merit or their being sorry for what they have done. Forgiveness isn’t about restitution. Forgiving is powerful and freeing. If Jesus can forgive us can’t we forgive others?

Jesus, thank you for the forgiveness that you spoke out in the midst of your suffering! Thank you for loving so completely and unconditionally. Help me, Lord, to also remember that forgiveness can be given in the midst of pain, just based on the decision to forgive. Let your love shine through me so that others might see how great you are.

イエス様、苦しみの真っ只中で許して下さり感謝します！完全に無条件に愛して下さり感謝します。主よ、すぐに許すという決定に基づいて、苦しみの真っ只中で許しが与えられるよう思いだし助けて下さい。私を通じであなたの愛を輝かしてくだされば、他の人があなたがどれほど素晴らしいかをみます。

"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. There is a trap that we fall into that keeps us from making the decision to forgive. We, who are imperfect, judge others for their imperfections! Perfect Jesus took the responsibility and blame for our imperfections. So what right do we have to judge others? How can we jump on someone else’s failure when we also fail? How can we criticize their faults when we have as many ourselves? Give the gift of forgiveness and acceptance, mercy and love, and it will be returned to you beyond measure!

Young girls dream of being a bride. To them it is like being a princess in a gorgeous gown and looking radiantly beautiful. A wedding can be lovely and full of romantic dreams. But in truth, marriage is work! We have been married forty-two years this month. In those forty two years we have had shared joys, heartache, fights, silences, delightful times, struggles, laughter, tears, comfort, and frustrations. We have been through a lot and know that it is work to keep a marriage going strong. Most brides and grooms face marriage with the idea theirs will be different. Single women want to find their “soul mate.” Men long for a woman who will share and encourage their excitement for the daily responsibilities as well as for the future. But the real task is to become the wife or husband you need to be, not in finding the mate that you think will make your life easy. Often women shy away from the word submissive because it sounds like being rug to be walked on. But submissiveness is not weakness. Being submissive is an attitude of voluntary unselfishness, wanting the best for your husband and willingly cooperating with him so that he knows you respect and admire him. Wives, our job is not to change our husbands, but to conduct ourselves as a living testimony of God’s grace, love, and mercy so that our husbands will see Christ in action in our lives. Is this easy? No! But just as Jesus surrendered His rights willingly because of love, so must we wives give up our rights out of love for our husbands.

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. NIV

あなたがたは、髪を編んだり、金の飾りをつけたり、着物を着飾るような外面的なものでなく、4 むしろ、柔和で穏やかな霊という朽ちることのないものを持つ、心の中の隠れた人がらを飾りにしなさい。これこそ、神の御前に価値あるものです。

Many women spend a small fortune on their makeup, clothes, and accessories. They want to look good and feel good about themselves. And they want to attract others to their looks. But often they don’t take care of the person inside of them that is miserable. The outside does not change the inside! There are two English expressions which talk about this and I use to say them to our daughters growing up. One is “pretty is as pretty does” and the other one is “you are only as pretty as you act.” Both of these mean your true beauty is best displayed in attitude and by action. If beauty was all you needed, then beautiful women would be the happiest. But they aren’t! Some of the most beautiful women I know are terribly insecure because they don’t know if they are liked for who they are or for only what they look like. Peter wasn’t telling women not to be attractive, but that their outward appearance isn’t as vital as their inner beauty. That inner beauty comes from knowing God and following His ways. It is true, eternal beauty. Looking good on the outside is just the framework of true beauty that comes from God’s grace working in you.

For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. NIV

むかし神に望みを置いた敬虔な婦人たちも、このように自分を飾って、夫に従ったのです。6 たとえばサラも、アブラハムを主と呼んで彼に従いました。あなたがたも、どんなことをも恐れないで善を行なえば、サラの子となるのです。

What is it about Sarah that should impress women to imitate her wifely skills? Basically she paid attention to Abraham and his needs. She gave him respect and cooperation and learned to adapt herself to him. Was she always successful? No! Read Genesis 16 for how she manipulated Abraham. From that manipulation we still pay the consequences through of the conflict between Arab and Jew. (Jews descended from the son of promise, Isaac, and Arabs from Ishmael) The point is that no wife is perfect. But wives, do your best to be a godly wife whose behavior inspires, not irritates. Don’t look for ways to manipulate your husband. But show respect and do your best to adapt to his needs. Is it always easy? NO! But, think about this, God uses your husband to develop godliness in you.

When Paul wrote about husbands and wives in Ephesians 5, more verses were used on the role of husbands than wives. Peter has more verses on wives but his one section to husbands really hits hard. The first punch is “live with your wife.” This “live” isn’t just to share the same house, but to have a close, intimate relationship. This isn’t about money, possessions or position in the company! Often a husband has more involvement in his company than with his wife. Japanese culture especially fosters this in men, but husbands from other countries are just as guilty. When the husband is more involved with work than with his wife, he looks at his wife as the keeper of the house, the producer of children and doesn’t bother to invest himself in their relationship. Husbands need to realize that their job provides the income. But his wife should be the one to provide a safe harbor as the husband learns how to cherish her and develop a strong relationship with her. Husbands need to adapt to their wives as much as wives need to adapt to their husbands. It is just expressed differently.

The New King James version says “dwell with them with understanding.” What is harder for a man than trying to understand his wife? Women are complex and their ways of thinking completely baffles men! When cultivating a positive relationship with your spouse you need God’s wisdom, grace, and unconditional love! It takes time, effort, and listening, really listening to her with your heart. Don’t react to how you feel about what she is saying, but ask God to help you hear her heart, praying for insight so you can understand her way of thinking, her fears, her determination, and her humor. Marriage isn’t for wimps! It takes work, effort, and tons of prayer. God uses marriage to teach us how to be godly in adversity and discouragement and when facing huge issues. Coming through those times victoriously binds a couple closer together in an intimate, lifelong binding love.

“The weaker partner” has nothing to do with brains, insight, spirituality, or integrity! It simply means that women are not as physically strong as men. I can put all my weight and effort into doing something but then my husband comes along and with no major effort does it! Granted, there are some things that take great strength and fortitude to do what men can’t do, like giving birth. All the muscle in the world isn’t what that kind of strength is about! Recognizing one another’s strengths and weaknesses helps make a marriage strong. Men don’t need to “put down” their wives to be strong. Actually that reveals insecurity and weakness. Men should never push their wives around physically but show the kind of love that Jesus gave. Ephesians 5:25 tells us “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” The only way men can love that way is by the grace and wisdom that only comes from God. Husbands and wives need to follow the same road map for marriage which is in the Bible and follow the same leader, God!

When you treat your wife as “heirs with you” you are giving respect and honor to her. Giving honor is not a quiet, inner reflection but an active decision to look for ways of expressing how precious she is to you. The word “respect” originally in the Greek is also translated as “precious or valuable.” Wives need to feel precious just as husbands need to feel significance. Notice the promise given at the end of the verse, “so that nothing will hinder your prayers.” For both husbands and wives looking for ways to express love, honor, and respect are acts of worship to God. It shows that you value the person God has given you and are going to allow that relationship to work godliness into your life. Being a godly partner in the marriage is up to you, whether you’re the husband or the wife! God’s desire is that we express His love to our spouse whether or not they also show unconditional love back to you. It is not dependant on how worthy they are, but on how much you choose to honor God and allow Him to work through you.

最後に申します。あなたがたはみな、心を一つにし、同情し合い、兄弟愛を示し、あわれみ深く、謙遜でありなさい。

To live in harmony is to have your combined differences working together in unity for a common goal. The Lord is our common denominator. He is the one thing we all have in common. Because of the Lord we can respect our differences, recognizing we are each one created to be different for a purpose and with a plan. Our different giftings make us more complete as the body of Christ. We should not look at our differences with jealousy, envy, or with criticism, but rather with acceptance and respect. Unity, not uniformity, is the goal. The one shared thing we must all do is love like Jesus loves and allow the fruit of the spirit to flourish in our hearts and actions. Galatians 5:22-23 …the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control…” Remember God’s style of love is “…patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7) Let your love be sincere and look for ways to express it wholeheartedly so that your life is a living testimony of the power of God’s love as we live in harmony.

Lord, your love is amazing. I want your love to be my standard. Sometimes it is hard to love like you do. But you are a wonderful teacher, Lord. And I want to learn from you how to let the power of your love rule me.

Romans 12:15 expresses what the heart of sympathy means, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” Sympathy unites hearts in understanding. It is not competitive. And there is no envy or jealousy. It is about hearts being united with understanding and compassion as well as rejoicing when others rejoice. Sympathy is when your attitude towards others outweighs your concern for yourself. It is thinking highly of others, investing love, care, and prayers for one another’s good. There is no room for selfishness or self-centeredness when our thoughts are centered on Jesus and loving like He loves! Jesus gave us the importance for loving when He summed up the Ten Commandments in Matt 22:37-39 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.” Loving the Lord and loving others doesn’t mean you neglect taking care of yourself. It is just that you are not so focused on your desires and wants. A lifestyle centered on Jesus first, others next, and then yourself leads to joy. Joy is freely given to the person who is truly centered on the Lord and His character. Remember that we become like whom we worship! One of the most precious aspects of God’s character is His sympathy and care for us.

The Greek word for love used here is “philio” which means to “love as an affectionate friend.” What is a truly godly friend? Friendship, as God has designed it, should be a source of rest and relief, comfort and encouragement, accountability and respect. A friend cares about your pain, but will lovingly challenge you to have godly responses to life’s difficulties. A godly friend is someone who will laugh and cry with you. You know you won’t be gossiped about or criticized because you know your friend accepts you as you are. This acceptance doesn’t mean they won’t challenge you where you are weak. But they will encourage you to let God’s grace work in you. Are you that kind of friend? Do you love, respect, and accept others, yet hold friends graciously accountable? What kind of friend are you?

Lord, thank you for being not just a loving savior and a gracious God, but for being a friend! You share all my joys and sorrows with a heart of love. You correct me to bring healing to my hurting heart. I want to be a friend like you!

Compassion is a fundamental characteristic of God which we experience through His grace. Grace isn’t received because of merit or perfection. Grace is freely given because the Lord looks beyond our faults and weaknesses and sees our need. We see this compassion in Jesus. An example of this is found in Matthew 9:36 “When he (Jesus) saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Through His compassion, Jesus has given us grace we need to meet any situation. There is nothing—no problem, no struggle—that His grace isn’t in ample supply. Through His compassionate grace He enables us to live a victorious, godly life. His compassionate grace enables us to look beyond ourselves and to see how others feel and have tenderness toward them and their situation. It is our choice to receive His grace to overcome self-centeredness and focus on effectively loving others. Look at Ephesians 4:31-32 and see what things hold us back and need to be let go so we can give godly compassion. “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Peter concludes this powerful verse with another key to spiritual health—humility. This is not a false humility expressed only in language and outward gestures, but a true humility of heart. Humility is not a show for others to see and think, “Wow, you are humble.” If that were the case, the act itself would be based in pride! Humility is not belittling yourself, or being less than dignified. Humility is lifting others up. We begin with a heart of worship to God. We learning to first focus on Him, and then on others, before self. Humility recognizes that you are a sinner, but that you have value to God. He has created you for fellowship and loves you unconditionally and wholeheartedly. Humility accepts others with gratitude and praise. Humility reaches out to others with the same heart of love and compassion that God has given you.

Thank you for all that you have done for me because of your love, Lord! I am overwhelmed at times by your love. I don’t want to be corrupted by pride, but let humility govern my responses to you and others.

Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. NIV

When do we return evil with evil and insult with insult? That would be the very nature of unforgiveness, looking for ways to pay back by words and deeds the hurt you are nurturing. Forgiveness is the very heart of Christian living. In choosing to live a lifestyle of forgiveness, we must stop and examine the pitfalls of not forgiving. Unforgiveness actually feels more “natural” than forgiveness. Forgiving requires a supernatural grace and a godly perspective to appreciate its value. If you realize that you are plotting a hurt by either word or deed it should be a clue that you are nursing a grudge. You can’t have a grudge or plan retaliation and still be forgiving. They just can’t co-exist! Unforgiveness turns hearts bitter and angry and clogs our hearts with such intense hurt that we can’t receive God’s love. Forgive and be set free from the agony of unforgiveness! Unforgiveness just isn’t worth the cost!

Lord, just as you have forgiven me, I ask you to work in my heart to recognize the signs of unforgiveness that I am harboring. I want to live a lifestyle of forgiving others over imagined or real slights. I want the freedom that forgiveness affords!

For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. 11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” NIV

「いのちを愛し、幸いな日々を過ごしたいと思う者は、舌を押えて悪を言わず、くちびるを閉ざして偽りを語らず、11 悪から遠ざかって善を行ない、平和を求めてこれを追い求めよ。12 主の目は義人の上に注がれ、主の耳は彼らの祈りに傾けられる。しかし主の顔は、悪を行なう者に立ち向かう。」

The antidote for harboring unforgiveness in your heart is the decision to forgive by the grace of God. Don’t allow the residual emotions to rule you! Look for ways to be a blessing. Let godly love rule your words and actions. Give your hurt to Jesus. Imagine that hurt being nailed to the cross and dying there. That is just one of the reasons Jesus was crucified. At His resurrection the only thing that stayed dead was the power of sin over a believer’s life. Don’t allow what has been killed through Christ’s sacrifice to come back and haunt your life. Learn how to live by Jesus’ resurrected power and be a person who has learned how to be a blessing!

Lord, thank you for your resurrection power and grace! Thank you for taking my sins and my emotional hurts to be nailed to the cross. I do want to be a person who blesses others. You have made that possible.

Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened." NIV

もし、あなたがたが善に熱心であるなら、だれがあなたがたに害を加えるでしょう。14 いや、たとい義のために苦しむことがあるにしても、それは幸いなことです。彼らの脅かしを恐れたり、それによって心を動揺させたりしてはいけません。

“Who”, indeed…isn’t there the idea that if you are good, speaking no evil, doing good and seeking God that life will be fair? But life isn’t fair and the devil never plays fair! We live in a world filled with iniquity. But life’s adversities are our greatest teachers. In pain and struggle we learn the power of God’s grace to be an overcomer. In affliction we discover true godly peace beyond understanding. God sees our godly responses to affliction. He knows when we’ve chosen to respond without compromising His principles. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 God is always faithful! Hang on to that truth when you face stress, adversity, unfairness, struggles etc.

Lord, I know I have no need to fear because you turn even the most difficult situations to good. I choose to trust you and walk by faith. Sometimes my emotions overwhelm me, but I know in my heart that you always give grace and wisdom to those who seek you. So with an attitude of gratitude I will give thanks to you, no matter what.

So much revolves around this verse. It is one that I go back to over and over again to remind me that life isn’t about Cinderella-like fairy tale endings…”and they lived happily ever after”. Life is not just accepting problems, but welcoming times of total weakness because in that weakness, God’s strength and grace is truly experienced. Everyone faces problems. As believers we have the key to success in the midst of adversity. That key is Jesus. Giving Him our problems, walking forward with eyes on Him gives us the power we need for living. A Christian’s light shines brightest in adversity because we have Jesus’ positive example. With His grace we can face anything with a positive attitude. We don’t need to panic or be depressed because we aren’t alone! Trust God. Walk in the confidence that He will lead you, comfort you, and give you the grace you need for every situation!

But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander NIV

むしろ、心の中でキリストを主としてあがめなさい。そして、あなたがたのうちにある希望について説明を求める人には、だれにでもいつでも弁明できる用意をしていなさい。16 ただし、優しく、慎み恐れて、また、正しい良心をもって弁明しなさい。そうすれば、キリストにあるあなたがたの正しい生き方をののしる人たちが、あなたがたをそしったことで恥じ入るでしょう。

What does it mean to truly acknowledge Christ as Lord? The Greek word used for “Lord” here is one that expresses “supreme authority.” Making Jesus Lord of our lives is placing Him as the supreme authority over our hearts with the determination to live by His standards. When Jesus was accused, He didn’t open His mouth to defend Himself. He, who was sinless and the Son of God, did not say one word in His own defense. What can we do when we are accused wrongly or persecuted? What can we say when everything is us cries out to defend or attack? It is difficult to surrender our rights to fight back. But pray and turn the situation and people over to the Lord and trust Him to lead you with wisdom and love. Then rest in His wisdom to bring about results that will bless. Worrying and fretting achieve nothing but stress and more problems. Child-like faith and trust in the eternal purposes of the Lord is the only true solution.

There is no better opportunity than struggle to express God’s grace and love. Be prepared to share the grace and love of God when times are difficult. Jesus can give you wisdom to speak with loving grace. During those times He will give you wisdom and the words that will speak love into other’s hearts. If we speak in our own wisdom we often use words that are harsh, ambiguous, unkind, or meaningless. But when we leave it all in the Lord’s hands, asking Him for wisdom, we can speak the truth in love and others will see Christ in us. Keep the integrity of godly ways. Don’t allow yourself to be pulled down to the level of the ungodly! Look to Jesus who is the author and finisher of your faith and respond with His love and grace!

Thank you that there is nothing too hard for you, Lord. I do want to speak your truth in love! I do desire to live by your standards. I need you every minute of every day, Lord! Your grace and wisdom are like air and water to me. I can’t live without them!

It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. NIV

もし、神のみこころなら、善を行なって苦しみを受けるのが、悪を行なって苦しみを受けるよりよいのです。

If you have done something wrong then you deserve the consequences, right? Yet people even complain about that! For example, have you ever seen an NBA basketball game where a player fouls then dramatically complains because he got caught? Aren’t we like that sometimes as well? Human nature also says, “It’s not fair!” That is something parents and teachers hear from their children all the time! But as adults, don’t we feel the same way? Our daughter-in-law uses an expression, “get over it!” In other words don’t get stuck in the unfairness you feel. Peter is very graciously saying the same thing as “get over it!” We often forget Jesus’ perspective on persecution in Matt 5:10-12 because we want to demand our rights. “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” When you suffer for doing what is right, remember to keep looking to the Author of your faith and remember the goal!

Lord, I don’t enjoy suffering or persecution and I often fall into the trap of feeling “it’s not fair!” I forget about your unjust suffering and persecution. Forgive me! Help me to remember to give up my rights and have the same attitude that you do about them. My goal is to be more like you so my life will glorify your holy name!

主よ、私は苦しみや迫害を楽しみませんし、よく罠に陥ると「平等ではない！」と感じあなたの苦しみと迫害を忘れます。許して下さい！私の義を諦め、あなたがされた同じ態度を思い出すように助けて下さい。私のゴールはよりあなたのようになる事で私の人生があなたの御名の栄光をたたえるでしょう！

For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, NIV

キリストも一度罪のために死なれました。正しい方が悪い人々の身代わりとなったのです。それは、肉においては死に渡され、霊においては生かされて、私たちを神のみもとに導くためでした。

Jesus is our example of how the righteous suffer. Not one of us can comprehend the depth of suffering Jesus went through from the moment He started for Jerusalem that last week of His life in a human body. Luke tells the story of what went on after the triumphant entry in chapter 19 verses 41-44, “As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, ‘If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace — but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you.’ ” His heart grieved over their spiritual coldness. He understood and still understands the depth of the devil’s deception toward us. That is the very reason that Jesus went to the cross and suffered unjustly. His desire was for us to be set free. By knowing the truth we can be set free from the lies and receive an abundant life full of grace and mercy. No man can take those gifts away no matter what they do to us. Nothing, absolutely nothing, others do to us can separate us from His love and grace!

その霊において、キリストは捕われの霊たちのところに行ってみことばを宣べられたのです。20 昔、ノアの時代に、箱舟が造られていた間、神が忍耐して待っておられたときに、従わなかった霊たちのことです。わずか八人の人々が、この箱舟の中で、水を通って救われたのです。

Peter speaks of an event all the Jews were familiar with, Noah’s ark and the flood. The times and situation are described in Genesis 6:5-8. “The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. So the LORD said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth — men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air — for I am grieved that I have made them." But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.” Judgment works against the evil minded. But faith in God brings deliverance. God’s truth was proclaimed in Noah’s day but people didn’t listen. It was proclaimed in Peter’s day and it is being proclaimed today. Our response to God’s truth determines the outcome of our lives.

1 Peter 3:20b-21　ペテロ1　3章20b～21節

…God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also — not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, NIV

昔、ノアの時代に、箱舟が造られていた間、神が忍耐して待っておられたときに、従わなかった霊たちのことです。わずか八人の人々が、この箱舟の中で、水を通って救われたのです。21 そのことは、今あなたがたを救うバプテスマをあらかじめ示した型なのです。バプテスマは肉体の汚れを取り除くものではなく、正しい良心の神への誓いであり、イエス・キリストの復活によるものです。

Peter isn’t saying that the act of baptism saves us. He is pointing out how water symbolizes an inner cleansing. Just as Noah and his family were safe in the ark, we are secure in Jesus when we believe in Him as our Lord and Savior. Being baptized declares for all to see how our hearts have been changed because of Jesus. Life in Christ doesn’t begin and end with baptism any more than a wedding is the sum total of a marriage. Baptism declares that you are forgiven and are choosing to live your life through the resurrection power of Jesus. Our life with Christ is daily! And He daily gives us the grace we need to live victoriously!

イエス様、毎日私たちとおられる事に感謝します！一度きりの経験では無い事に感謝します。しかし、あなたを知る事は、私たちがあなたと親しく交わる、毎日成長する総合的な関係です。あなたのみが守られ安全な真実の場です。

1 Peter 3:22　ペテロ1　3章22節

who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand — with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him. NIV

キリストは天に上り、御使いたち、および、もろもろの権威と権力を従えて、神の右の座におられます。

Jesus is Victor over sin and death! We don’t have to be controlled by the lies and deceptions of the devil! Hebrews 7:25 tells us more about this “…He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.” (NASB) Another beautiful picture of the victory that Jesus has given us is found in Hebrews. “The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” (Hebrews 1:3) Thankfully Jesus didn’t rest on the laurels of His victory. He is still working on our behalf by interceding for us, giving us the grace we need to become overcomers. Our part is to daily walk with Him by faith, trust His wisdom and rest in His mercy and forgiveness.

Thank you, Jesus, for all you have done and continue to do for me. I do want to live in the victory that you have given. I want to know you more and to live in the fullness of the abundant life you give!

イエス様、私にして下さった事、今もして頂いている事に感謝します。あなたが与えられた勝利の中で生きたいです。あなたをもっと知り、あなたに与えられる豊かに満ちた人生を生きたいです。

1 Peter 4:1　ペテロ1　4章1節

Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. NIV

このように、キリストは肉体において苦しみを受けられたのですから、あなたがたも同じ心構えで自分自身を武装しなさい。肉体において苦しみを受けた人は、罪とのかかわりを断ちました。

Peter’s point here is that Christ has suffered for us. Therefore shouldn’t we live in the victory He has given us? To “arm yourself” is a word picture of a soldier putting on his armor and weapons. Paul says the same thing in detail in Ephesians 6:10-18. “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” Yes, Christ’s death gives us victory. But He also equips us with what we need to stand strong against the enemy’s onslaught. Our purpose becomes as His as we arm ourselves with the attitude of Jesus. By glorifying God we have victory over the devil’s tactics. The devil’s voice is loud and bothersome. But if we stay in daily communication with the Lord through His Word and in prayer, we can tune out the noise and center ourselves on the soft, gentle voice of the Lord.

主よ、備えて下さる事に感謝します！あなたの言葉は敵と戦うために必要な全てです。あなたの言葉により生きる事であなたから背く罪はないでしょう。あなたの言葉を私の心と感情に通せれば、私の動機、態度と動作は、あなたの真実と道を基本とします。

As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do — living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. NIV

こうしてあなたがたは、地上の残された時を、もはや人間の欲望のためではなく、神のみこころのために過ごすようになるのです。3 あなたがたは、異邦人たちがしたいと思っていることを行ない、好色、情欲、酔酒、遊興、宴会騒ぎ、忌むべき偶像礼拝などにふけったものですが、それは過ぎ去った時で、もう十分です。

When we accept Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior, we choose to no longer let sin be our master. The closer we draw to Him the more our desires change to line up with what honors the Lord. Before Christ we didn’t clearly understand the difference between right and wrong. For example, when we first arrived in Japan I had a rudimental understanding of the Japanese language, a distant understanding from my youth in Japan. My husband had next to no knowledge. We felt deaf, dumb, and blind because we couldn’t understand, speak, or read the language. I already had a history of a bit of Japanese so I picked it up faster. It was more challenging for him because he was starting from the very beginning. The point is that many Christians feel the same way. Some may have a history of a Christian kindergarten or other connection so you start picking up concepts faster. Some come knowing nothing but the simple truth of God’s love. Take your time to let the Lord teach you step by step. He will give you the strength and wisdom you need as you seek Him. The Lord doesn’t expect you to know everything immediately. Just respond in daily relationship to Him.

They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you. But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. NIV

彼らは、あなたがたが自分たちといっしょに度を過ごした放蕩に走らないので不思議に思い、また悪口を言います。5 彼らは、生きている人々をも死んだ人々をも、すぐにもさばこうとしている方に対し、申し開きをしなければなりません。

We have found a great frustration in trying to capture and explain to others who have never been here what living in Japan is like. We do our best with pictures, presents, and stories. But it always feels so inadequate. Some have come and their eyes are opened. They become enthralled with everything. As Christians, it is sometimes hard to communicate what it is like to live in the Jesus’ Kingdom of Light. We can talk about the grace, joy, peace, and hope we have in Christ. When someone listens and responds, accepting Jesus as their Lord and Savior, everything starts making sense. Our responsibility is to live and share God’s truth so others can experience the joy of knowing the Lord.

What is your approach to Jesus? Do you come expecting Him to do things your way? Or do you come expecting Him to meet you? Do you come humbly seeking to do things His way? James 1:4 teaches us to “…let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” (NKJV) Let God work in you when you must persevere in faith. That patience works in your heart, perfecting you to be like Jesus. Suffering and waiting are not the enemies. The problem is how we respond negatively to those times! Do you come to Jesus seeking to know His character and follow His ways? Do you treat Jesus as precious as well as with love and respect? If you answer “yes, but…” you need to examine your heart. We need to find a way, by faith, to say “yes and amen (so be it)” Let Him work in our hearts and lives to become all we can be by His grace and love.

Lord, if I am truly honest I know that when I sing “Change my Heart, O God, make it more like you…” there are times I want you to just do it but not teach me through struggles. That is the human in me! But truly I want my heart to be tender toward you in everything. I just forget sometimes and I react instead of respond. Forgive me, Lord. I need your grace every minute of every day!

Because there were few trees in the area at that time, most of the buildings were made with cut blocks of stone. Therefore, the imagery was very vivid to the readers. Everything from city walls to palaces, from temples to streets, was built from stone. Even memorials to remember what God had done for the Israelites were made from stone. Jesus, as the Living Stone, shows His enduring strength. When I think back over my life, there has been one constant—Jesus. I may not always understand that He is with me during a crisis. But in hindsight I see that He was the Living Stone that held me up. If you are in crisis right now, be encouraged that Jesus is, in truth, the Living Stone. You can trust Him!

Lord, thank you for being faithful and true. You are constantly with me, always for me and eternally loving, gracious and merciful in all your ways toward me. Thank you for the compassion and mercy you show to me!

Rejecting Jesus isn’t just about not accepting Him as Lord and Savior. But every single time you try to do it in your own strength without going to Him for His grace and wisdom you are rejecting Him. We snub Him when we choose not to follow His ways of treating others justly and with mercy and love. We deny Him when we allow bitterness, unforgiveness, and anger to rule us. We justify our own wrong doings but don’t show mercy to others. That attitude rejects Christ! Worry and complaining seems justifiable in us, but unforgivable in others. Yet worry and complaining rejects Jesus because there is no trust or faith expressed. When we turn from His mercy and grace, when we don’t trust Him but instead worry, we reject Jesus. Stop. Examine your own heart and see where you continually reject Christ. 2 Corinthians 13:5 “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? ...” (NKJV)

Lord, open my understanding to the areas where I reject you. Give me your perspective as I examine my own heart and motives. I don’t want to reject you in any way, shape or form!

God gave His best, His most honored and valuable Son for us. Jesus didn’t have to come to earth. Mankind could have been written off as valueless. But “God so loved the word that He gave his only Son…” (John 3:16) “The world” means you and me! That also means that God loves that person who drives you crazy! And He loves those people who mock Him and your faith in Him, as well as those people who commit horrendous crimes. God did not give His dearly, beloved Son just for “nice” people, but for everyone! Since God loved people so much that He gave His best, what right do we have to complain about others? Or not forgive them? Or reject them? God looks beyond the sin and sees the value of the person. “He…did not spare His own son, but delivered Him up for us all…” (Romans 8:32) God gave His best for us. Shouldn’t we respond by giving our best back with a heart full of gratitude for who He is and what He has done?

Thank you, Father, for giving your precious Son for me. I am so imperfect. Yet you gave your perfection so I could come into your family. Thank you for loving me so much! Jesus thank you for loving me beyond my understanding and giving your life for me. I am grateful and want to show it by staying tenderhearted toward you!

あなたがたも生ける石として、霊の家に築き上げられなさい。そして、聖なる祭司として、イエス・キリストを通して、神に喜ばれる霊のいけにえを捧げなさい。

Peter gives his readers several word pictures in this verse. One is that our lives can be like living monuments to God’s grace and His love. Jesus is the cornerstone. But we as living stones build the church so others can see how wonderful Jesus is. Remember that stones were used in building monuments. Samuel in 1 Samuel 7:12 built a monument to honor what the Lord had done in defeating their enemies “… Samuel took a stone and set it up … and called its name Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far the LORD has helped us."” (NKJV) We proclaim “Ebenezer” each time the Lord’s grace is seen in us. As believers, we have the opportunity to be a living testimony of God’s grace, mercy, and love. Although the devil tries to divert us and deceive us through temptations that deny the reality of God’s work for us and in us, we can have victory over that temptation! When we stop and realize that God is in us and with us, we can have victory over the temptation and proclaim the greatness of God!

Paul talks about this spiritual house in Ephesians 2:20-22 (you are) “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.” Every one who has gone before us in the faith is another stone in this wonderful spiritual house. Think of people, both the living and those who are already in heaven, who have inspired your faith and remember how important they were to you. In that same way, you are to be an encouragement to others because they see that your faith is built on the Solid Rock, Jesus. Let’s encourage one another. Every step of faith we take will inspire someone else to keep the faith and never to give up. This is a process. We are all “under construction” as God works in our lives. It is all beneficial not only to us, but also to the others who see the Master at work.

Another picture presented is that of a priest. A priest is one who is set apart from the world as God’s own to live a life of holiness and able to personally draw near to God. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, the first condition for being a priest is met because we are set apart from unbelievers. As we study and learn about God’s character and ways and choose to live accordingly, we are living in holiness. This qualifies us to draw near to Him. Jesus did the work so we could be made into a holy priesthood. Romans 12:1-2 says, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (NIV) We offer our lives to Him who loves us enough to have given His life to purchase our salvation through His blood sacrifice on the cross. When we respond by giving our lives back to Him, this is an acceptable sacrifice. Jesus has done the work so we can be a holy priesthood. So our attitude should come from a heart of humility, seeing Him as the One who is worthy and honorable.

Thank you for what you have done for me on the cross, Jesus. I want my life to be a living sacrifice honoring you for who you are and what you have done. I keep praying this way to remind myself to stay humble before you and not take off on some prideful tangent. It is all about you, Lord, and I choose to worship you from my heart and through my actions.

1 Peter 2:6　ペテロ１　2章６節

For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame." NIV

なぜなら、聖書にこうあるからです。「見よ。私はシオンに、選ばれた石、尊い礎石を置く。彼に信頼する者は、決して失望させられることがない。」

Peter quoted a prophecy from Isaiah 28:16. The cornerstone (sometimes called the capstone) is the stone placed at the corner to align the whole building and tie it together for strength and durability. Psalms also prophesies about the Messiah who will be the cornerstone for our faith. Psalms 118:22-23 “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This was the LORD's doing; It is marvelous in our eyes.” (NKJV) This wasn’t the first time that Peter referred to Jesus as the cornerstone. There is quite a story about Peter written in Acts 3 and 4 where Peter, proclaiming healing in the name of Jesus, saw a man totally healed who was lame from birth. The religious leaders of the day weren’t exactly thrilled over that! So they arrested Peter and John who appear before the Sanhedrin, the highest ruling body and court of justice in those times. This is what Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them in Acts 4:8-12 “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. This is the 'stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (NKJV) Peter understood the power of Jesus as the precious cornerstone of our faith. Let us look daily for ways to keep on building our faith on our wonderful cornerstone!

Jesus, thank you for your salvation. But more than that, thank you for the power you give by your grace for my everyday life. I look to you to lead me, guide me, and show me the way to proclaim how great and awesome you are.

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone,"NIV

したがって、より頼んでいるあなたがたには尊いものですが、より頼んでいない人々にとっては。「家を建てる者たちが捨てた石、それが礎となった。」のであって、

Believers see this Stone as precious and build their lives in Him. I wonder, was Peter also remembering the parable that Jesus taught at the end of the Sermon on the Mount? "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."(Matthew 7:24-27) By using the word pictures of “stones” was Peter trying to trigger his reader’s imagination about the strength and stability of building on the true capstone (which is another word for cornerstone)? There is one Rock, one place of security, one way to build your faith and on which to base your life and that is on the Lord Jesus Christ!

Jewish history was established through God’s promise to Abraham. Their culture was built on and around clear pictures, symbols and language that perfectly describe the work of the Messiah. However, when Jesus came He was rejected by the leaders because He wasn’t what they wanted in a Messiah. They aren’t the only ones who reject Jesus. There are many people who admire Christian ethics, even respect Jesus, but reject Him as the Son of God. Others reject everything about Jesus because they are full of pride and worship their own strengths and abilities. Others want to “earn” their way in a religious form. But they all have missed the point! The point is that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life! Believing in Jesus as your Lord and Savior is the doorway to a relationship with the Living God!

Besides the name “Christian”, “The Way” became another expression for believers of Christ in the early church. It was said derogatorily but believers in Jesus received it as truth and as a positive expression. Following “The Way” has the sense of going in a different direction than others. It isn’t always easy to be different from those around you as you follow “The Way.” But it is truly the way of truth and it is filled with grace, peace, joy, and a living hope. As you follow the Lord in faith you will discover how to let go of burdens and problems, giving them to the One who is stronger than we are and who takes our heaviness and gives us rest. Jesus cares for you, nurtures you, and encourages you when you turn to Him. You aren’t meant to carry the burdens of condemnation, worry, and depression. These things weigh you down, robbing you of the joy and peace Jesus desires to give you. Follow “The Way,” (His way) by giving up the burdens that weigh you down!

Because truth means “faithfulness to a moral standard” you can relax and depend on the constancy of truth. Truth is one of the definitive characteristics of God. Take a step back in history and hear what Moses said about God’s character in Deuteronomy 32:4. “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.” Why should we listen to Moses? In Exodus 33:11 we learn that the Lord would speak to Moses face to face as a man speaks with a friend. David, who was a man after God’s own heart, said in Psalm 86:15 “…you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.” John’s testimony of who Jesus is found in John 1:14, 16-18 “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. From the fullness of His grace we have all received one blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.” Truth is found in Jesus! His words, works, and character exemplify the solid truth of God. There is never ever even a shadow of turning from the truth for it is absolutely impossible for God to lie. The opposite of truth is a lie. In John 8:44 Jesus defines the character of the devil John 8:44 “…(the devil) was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” So on whom do you want to base your life and follow? Don’t be deceived by the lies the devil cunningly uses to lure you, but follow with confidence the steadfast, eternal truth of God.

The word “life” in English has several definitions. Of course, in Japanese even the words are different. One definition is daily life. Another is the period of time between birth and death. And yet another is eternal life. The Greek word used for “to live” can be both literal and figurative. Jesus said in John 10:10 The thief (the devil) does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. (NKJV) This abundant life is not just for after death, but also for the here and now. We find a wonderful promise in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (NKJV) All our yesterdays are history—our mistakes, joys, and sorrows. Everything is past. But when we look at our yesterdays we will discover God’s faithfulness in spite of man’s sinfulness.Our tomorrows are yet to come. But we can personally know the One who knows the purpose for our life and His plans to bring us hope and joy. Abundant life isn’t about wealth, power or position. You can have lots of that and still feel incomplete, always wanting to fill the emptiness in your heart. Abundant life is something that happens within us. It’s the Spirit of God bringing wholeness and filling our hearts with His love, joy, peace, and a living hope. Jesus gives us life for today and all our tomorrows. Another special promise can be found in 1 Corinthians 2:9-10. Read it and remember God’s promise. “…Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him. But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.” (NKJV)

Imagine that you have an opportunity not just to meet but to spend time with the head of state of your country. But just before you met him you slip and fall into a huge pile of horse dung and it covered you head to toe. Would you want to be immediately ushered into the head of state’s meeting room? Now suppose the head of state’s child witnessed your fall and came to you with total compassion, took you to a place where you could shower, and had a much more wonderful set of clothes for you to wear than what you had previously. Then with great kindness and thoughtfulness he dressed you head to toe in these magnificent clothes. He then escorted you into the presence of his father and personally introduced you as a friend. How do you think you would feel? God is holy, perfect, and righteous. So how can we as people who fail, are impure in our thoughts, motivations, and actions, come to Him? Jesus came to our fallen state, lovingly cleans us up, and makes us new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (NKJV) Jesus did more than clean us up. He paid the price for our sins so we could be set free. And be brought into the family of God. “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all…”1 Timothy 2:5-6a (NKJV)

John 3:17-18　ヨハネ3章17～18節

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. NIV

神が御子を世に遣わされたのは、世をさばくためではなく、御子によって世が救われるためである。御子を信じる者はさばかれない。信じない者は神のひとり子の御名を信じなかったので、すでにさばかれている。

Jesus was on a mission to set us free from sin and to give us an abundant life. But often we listen to the devil’s lies about being worthless and at fault for everything that is wrong. Satan’s aim is to devalue your life because he not only hates God, but he also hates you! Remember God’s truth found in Romans 8:1-2 “… there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death” NIV When you believe in Jesus you are set free from condemnation. When God puts His finger on an area of weakness in us, it brings healing and wholeness. When the devil ridicules you it is to destroy you and devalue what Jesus has done. Take time to read all of Romans 8 today and be encouraged. Remember always that God is for you!

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. NIV

しかし、あなたがたは、選ばれた種族、王である祭司、聖なる国民、神の所有とされた民です。それは、あなた方をやみの中から、ご自分の驚くべき光の中に招いてくださった方のすばらしい御技を、あなたがたが宣べ伝えるためです。

I love this verse! It is rich with meaning and full of hope, inspiring promises. The verse starts with “But” which establishes the contrast between believers and non-believers. As believers in Christ we haven’t missed the point of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. We have grasped the value of who Jesus is. That automatically sets us apart as a treasure to God. Have you ever been a new parent or been around new parents? Parents look at their child and see beauty and they cherish the new life as precious. Their child is special and different from all others. Another person looks at the same child and sees nothing special, a squalling bundle with a red face. It is, in a small way, an example of how others may not see you as special, but God does. It is not that He doesn’t see your faults and weaknesses. He looks beyond that, accepting you, loving you unconditionally, and giving you the promise of forgiveness, enabling grace and loyal love. We can rest contentedly in the arms of God who knows us through and through and loves us still.

What makes you royal? You may not feel royal. But as believers you have joined in worship of the king of Kings and lord of Lords. So you belong to Him, just as He belongs to you. That means, as believers, we have unlimited access to the royal throne of God and His grace. We have a liberty of spirit that only comes from relationship with Jesus. The responsibilities of the priesthood are to mediate between God and man. We do that as we sincerely pray for others and reach out to them in the power of God’s love. We have the responsibility of choosing to live in integrity. Having integrity means that you won’t allow deceit or an uncaring attitude to have any place in your life. We, as a royal priesthood, are set apart to serve, not as an advisor who is uninvolved, but as a full participant, committed to help others and to honor God. Our lives need to be examples of what is holy and pleasing to God. By choosing to honor God in all that you do and say, you give God a pleasing sacrifice. It isn’t always easy to choose not to act on negative impulses. But it is rewarding in the long run to deny the temptation and reach out for God’s grace to overcome the pull of temptation.

Thank you, Lord. Your mercy and love overwhelms me. I want to honor you by serving you with integrity and love. I want to learn more of your ways and live daily by them. Help me learn more of you and more of your ways I pray, O Lord my strength and my Redeemer.

As believers in the Living God we are joined by heart and spirit with people all over the world. We may not have a common language and our physical appearance may be different. But we have much in common because our spirits are joined in worship. Being a part of an international church gives us a preview of heaven where people from every kindred and tribe will be joined together in total unity and harmony before the throne of God. But while we are still on earth, we have the awesome responsibility and privilege to live our lives according to God’s heavenly culture. Our true home is heaven. We are just pilgrims passing our time here on earth. Let’s choose to live as lights to point the way to our loving, living Lord so others will be drawn to Jesus!

Lord, it is an awesome and humbling experience to know that I am a part of your holy nation here on earth. Thank you for the family of believers around the world. Show me how to pray for Christians who are being persecuted for their faith as well as how to encourage those who are new “kids” of your kingdom. Lord, I want to be an asset to you, not a liability. So I choose to live by your standards!

しかし、あなたがたは、選ばれた種族、王である祭司、聖なる国民、神の所有とされた民です。それは、あなた方をやみの中から、ご自分の驚くべき光の中に招いてくださった方のすばらしい御技を、あなたがたが宣べ伝えるためです。

You are God’s very own, purchased by the blood of Jesus. Jesus gave Himself on our behalf so He could redeem each one of us from the grasping claws of sin. He paid the price sin demanded so that we could be free and purified. He goes one step further and provides all the tools we need to live freely in His joy and peace. Our response to Jesus declares how much we value what He has done for us. It isn’t because we work so hard, but that we live fully committed to walk according to godly ways. We lay down the burden of worry to pick up the mantle woven with threads of faith, trust, and hope. We set aside the heavy bag of complaints and negativity to pick up a basket of hope, encouragement, and love. We turn from darkness to live in the light of His love and forgiveness. Belonging to God brings security and wings like an eagle to soar empowered by His grace. We turn from darkness to live in the light of God’s unconditional love and forgiveness. It isn’t that we don’t have problems or difficulties any longer. It’s just that living in God’s grace means those problems no longer control us, but we can be controlled by God’s enabling, awesome grace and love.

Thank you, Lord, for the security of belonging to you. Thank you for always providing what I need when I need it, whether it is grace, wisdom, forgiveness, mercy or any of the other benefits that knowing you brings. I rest in you and your unchanging grace!

The word “praise” comes from Latin and means price or value. The sense of the word is to assign value, Praising God expresses value for who He is as well as what He has done, what He is doing and recognizes what He will do in the future. One of my favorite expressions of praise is found in Lamentations 3. It never fails to encourage me that in the midst of cataclysmic heart break Jeremiah declares the praise of who God is and the hope found intrusting Him. “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassion never fails, they are new every morning great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him’. The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him.” (Verses 22-25) Can you commit yourself for looking for ways to enthusiastically declare the praises of the Lord both to Him and to others?

I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul shall make its boast in the LORD; the humble shall hear of it and be glad. 3 Oh, magnify the LORD with me, And let us exalt His name together. 4 I sought the LORD, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. NKJV

私はあらゆる時に主をほめたたえる。私の口には、いつも主への賛美がある。私の魂は主を誇る。貧しいものはそれを聞いて喜ぶ。私と共に主をほめよ。共に御名をあがめよう。私が主を求めると、主はこたえてくださった。私をすべての恐怖から救い出して下さった。

Praising God is not limited to when you feel like it! There are times we give “the sacrifice of praise” (Hebrews 13:15). Praising God isn’t circumstantial or emotional. It can be the switch that makes your faith stronger because your eyes are taken off your circumstances and put on the Lord. Sometimes we just need to remind ourselves that we have no need to fear. We just need to trust in the Living God! Praise gives us that ability. Today, especially think of things for which you want to praise God.
